R?sum? / Summary : “Massive poaching of elephants for ivory in North East of the Central African Republic (CAR), Bamingui-Bangoran and Vakaga Provinces, near to the borders with Sudan (South Darfur Province) and Chad (Salamat Region). In 2007, such as in the previous years, it is a really organised campaign. The slaughter of elephants started with the arrival of Sudanese poachers at the beginning of the dry season, early January for some areas, and mid-January for others. The end of the campaign takes place when the poachers leave with the onset of the wet season, around mid-May in some areas, and end of May for others. One can therefore estimate that the poaching campaign lasted 4 to 5 months.”

A new study, led by a University of Washington scientist, shows elephants are again being slaughtered in large numbers for their ivory tusks. Today's wholesale slaughter is fueled by demand in Asia, particularly Japan and China. The market among people eager to show their growing wealth has drawn crime syndicates. The pattern of killings is taking particularly heavy tolls among forest elephants. “

Elephants and chena cultivation are inextricably linked. The scheme will link cultivators to elephant conservation and make them feel that they are beneficiaries while protecting and conserving elephants and not handouts. During the rainy season, the elephants have plenty of food outside the chenas but the crops could be protected using ancient and more modern methods. After the harvesting, the chenas could be left to the elephants, and earn revenue for chena farmers through initiatives such as eco-tourism. A belt of chenas would ensure fodder for the elephants and stay away from human settlement. “

R?sum? / Summary : “At least 20 tons of ivory were smuggled into African and Asian countries this year by poachers, almost doubling the amount seized in previous years. The large cache worries anti-poaching experts trying to protect the African elephant from extinction. Though estimates of how much ivory was seized this year range from 20 tons to more than 24 tons, some smuggling experts think the real haul may have been much larger. Rising demand for ivory has driven the price from $200 per kilo in 2005 to more than $700 per kilo this year. One possibility is that it's coming out of basements and storage rooms owned by poachers who were waiting for prices to rise.Another possibility is that an unseen poaching crisis is now raging in central Africa, where dense forests make it hard to find the carcasses needed to quantify the carnage.”

Offering a safe and effective solution, a team of experts from Disney's Animal Kingdom and San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park developed a procedure for population control - elephant vasectomies. The technical team trained several African veterinarians on how to do the procedure, and researchers hope it will help advance techniques for surgery on other large animals, including hippos and rhinoceros.”
